 Landmark Forum Graduates In Kaua'i:

Virginia Beck

Living "The Life Of Our Dreams".

The possibility I love most from having done the Landmark Forum is the possibility of seeing possibility when it looks as if there is none. "How and where can I make a difference?" is the question that supports my work with women's health as a nurse practitioner, my involvement with community building work through West Kaua'i Medical Center's local clinics, and my support of Child and Family Services' "Nana's House", and the local YWCA. Girls' self esteem and teen mentorship is important to me.

I met my husband Marty Wessler, an amazing artist, when I was assisting at the Landmark Forum. He was a Landmark Forum Supervisor. ("Aha! I thought.....a man who is already trained! A fully functioning adult!!! ) Our relationship is extraordinary, because out of "Productivity, Service, and Well-being", and the Wisdom Course, we have learned that the secret to a powerful, enduring relationship is that we are each committed to the other fulfilling on their commitments in life. Thus I do not expect him to sacrifice his well-being or his growth and development for the relationship, and he is the same way with me.

The benefits of having taken these courses from Landmark Education are that our communication is full and complete, as we clear out the "garbage" that would disempower us and we are accomplishing many goals with a velocity that is surprising. It isn't always comfortable confronting my lapses of consciousness and integrity about my own commitments, but it is outrageously rewarding.

We had to confront many challenges in returning to Kaua'i but our commitment to ensuring that my mother can count on our presence for support has carried us through. My mother, aka "The Perfect One", is a lady with heroic past which includes a career in military intelligence during the early period of WWII, an ambulance paramedic in London during the Blitz and a Red Cross volunteer for over 50 years. She is 86 years old, alive and well, has taken the Landmark Forum and the Advanced Course.

My dad Clarence E. Beck, was a highly accomplished Brigadier General, retired, who died in 1997 but not until I accomplished my nearly 20 year goal of enrolling him in the Landmark Forum at about 75 years of age! He also did the Advanced Course. I was complete with his dying because having enrolled him in the Landmark Forum, I was finally able to give him a gift that approached the gift he gave me .....my life.

The extraordinary nature of the Hawaiian community is that it is entirely relationship based. One of the benefits of the Landmark Forum is the effectiveness in relating to others. As Landmark Forum graduates, being part of the community in Kaua'i is rewarding beyond our wildest dreams. Marty has built a gallery and art market in a remote rural community, and I am supporting women's health services. We are serving our community, we are living "the life of our dreams."

The Landmark Curriculum for Living has been one of the foundation pieces of our education and training for life. Marty and I in Kaua'i are always listening for possibility, and what we find is a community that is hungry to embrace it, and there is a lot of work to be done.

The possibility of living as other than a separate identity is revealed to me in my relationship with the diverse mixture of cultures in Hawai'i. Hawai'i is a living expression of the commitment to nurturing and empowering families, of the distinct inclusiveness of diversity, which grounds my vision of "Hawai'i: Leading the Planet Home!" Hawai'i on the leading edge of bringing peace to the planet. I am clear that having the Landmark Forum in Hawai'i will have a positive impact on the realization of my vision, as well as your visions too!

Imua! Forward into the Future!

If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for wealth and power, but for a passionate sense of what might be, for the eye, which ever young and ardent sees the possible. Pleasure disappoints, possibility never. And what wine is so sparkling, what so fragrant, what so intoxicating as possibility! Søren Kierkegaard.
