Landmark Education in Japan

The Acknowledgment Party
from the Landmark Tokyo Center:

Being loved, known, and appreciated.

The Acknowledgment Party by Landmark Tokyo Center, September 2003. 010230.

From Landmark Forum Leader Takatoshi Ueno:

On September 14, 2003, there was a party for our graduates, that was held by Landmark Tokyo Center. The theme of the party was “Being loved, known and appreciated.” The intention of the party was re-inventing the background of relatedness between Landmark Staffs, volunteer partners and graduates.

The hall for the party was by the Harumi Wharf that is the sea-lane gateway to the world. We could see the beautifully illuminated Rainbow Bridge (a very famous bridge of Tokyo) and Tokyo Bay through the glass wall at the back of the stage.

There were 350 graduates there and everyone shared the greatness of taking a stand for the transformation of life itself. All women and men dressed up and they expressed “grace” and “beauty”. The atmosphere of the night was festive and alive by brilliance and elegance, like that of the Academy Award. Only we think ours was incomparably better.

Jerome Downes delivered one distinction at the evening. He said, “In Japan, there is a culture that women serve men, but tonight, women are princesses and men are gentlemen, and men take care and serve women, like a treasure.” Women were being served and men were serving food and drinks to women. They were a bit awkward at the beginning, but sure enough, princesses and gentlemen were born one after another!

The planning and managing of the party were all done by one of the professional event producers who is our graduate. The craftsmen, who are our graduates, did great stage settings and the magician, who did a wonderful performance, is also a graduate. The space was really created by the contribution from our graduates. It was the most inspiring place to be in Japan that evening.

Staff, volunteer partner and graduate related to each other without “our roles” that we have everyday, and we caused a profound sense of unity as being partners by taking a stand for transformation of life itself. Deeper relationship was born from the space.

Jerome presented “best dresser award” and “the most transformed award” at the end of the party.

Everybody at the party transformed oneself to princess and gentleman, and they left the party with their faces shining with joy.

If I were to wish for anything, I should not wish for wealth and power, but for a passionate sense of what might be, for the eye, which ever young and ardent sees the possible. Pleasure disappoints, possibility never. And what wine is so sparkling, what so fragrant, what so intoxicating as possibility! Søren Kierkegaard.
